St. Charles middle school evacuated for cooking oil fire

A cooking oil fire in the kitchen classroom caused a St. Charles middle school to be evacuated Tuesday morning, fire officials said.

Nobody was injured when the overheated cooking oil caught fire in a pot just before noon at Thompson Middle School, 705 W. Main St. It was extinguished by putting a lid over the pot and use of a fire extinguisher, fire officials said in a news release.

The blaze was just enough to cause the entire school to be evacuated. No damage was caused. Geneva and Batavia fire departments assisted.
