Enhancing economic vitality and promoting travel spending
An interview with Michael Cassa, president and CEO of the Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation and Visitors Bureau.
Q: What is the main goal of the Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation?
A: Our mission is "to enhance the economic vitality of the Village of Downers Grove through the retention, expansion and attraction of business that is conducive to improving the quality of life in Downers Grove."
Q: Tell us a few highlights of the area.
A: Downers Grove has seven hotels, including two full service hotels: the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton, and the Marriott Suites Hotel. Our community is located in the heart of DuPage County, within close proximity to O'Hare and Midway Airports. In addition, I-88 and I-355 intersect in Downers Grove. There are also three Metra Stations, including the third busiest Metra station, located in Downtown Downers Grove. Our downtown features restaurants, shops and events throughout the year.
Q: What is the main goal of the Downers Grove Visitors Bureau?
A: Our mission is to "promote and facilitate travel and entertainment spending in Downers Grove with an emphasis on overnight stays."
Q: What is a hot industry trend in your area?
A: Downers Grove is one of the premier locations for corporate, regional and division headquarters projects. In addition, there are tremendous opportunities for commercial redevelopment projects. This includes three new upscale car dealerships: Bentley, Lamborghini and Aston Martin.
Q: What are business people here talking about right now in Downers Grove?
A: The opening of the new Art Van Furniture store on Butterfield Road. Art Van has designated this as their Illinois flagship store. It is also the largest store in their entire chain at 112,000 square feet. More than 1,500 people attended their grand opening, which featured a live performance by Jennifer Hudson. Cindy Crawford will be the special guest at an event at the store in October.
Q: Are there any new initiatives coming up?
A: The Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation hired one of the nation's premier consulting firms, AECOM, to conduct a comprehensive market study of the Downers Grove area.
Q: What book are you reading right now?
A: "Hamilton: The Revolution."
Q: What was your first job?
A: I grew up working in our family meat and produce market in Michigan. I started stocking shelves and bagging groceries when I was seven years old.
