Assurance 5K tops $5,000 for Girls in the Game

Assurance and friends of Assurance more than $5,000 for Girls in the Game at the We Can Be Heroes Assurance 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 24, in Busse Woods, Elk Grove Village.

More than 250 participants gathered at the fun walk/run dressed as their favorite super heroes, ready to make a difference for the nonprofit promoting sports and fitness opportunities for girls.

In addition to a 5K walk/run, the event featured an age-category and family costume contest. The event is part of the independent insurance agency's corporate giving program, Assurance Caring Together (ACT), and has been an extension of its wellness program the last four years.

"We launched the ACT program to deliver positive change to those in our community who need it most," said Steven Handmaker, CMO at Assurance. "Seeing the excitement and enthusiasm of everyone that showed up to the event is a demonstration of the continued success of the program, and the proceeds raised are going to an organization that truly makes a difference."

Girls in the Game encourages sports, fitness, nutrition, health education and leadership development among girls - empowering them to be game changers. Girls in the Game is a partner of the ACT program, in addition to several other local Chicago and nationwide charities. Since 2005, Assurance employees have donated over 19,000 labor hours and thousands of dollars to more than 85 local and national charities. Assurance headquarters is in Schaumburg.
