Mount Prospect Woman's Club kicks off 90th year
The Mount Prospect Woman's Club will host a Membership Tea Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Mount Prospect Village Hall Community Room.
High tea will be served at noon, followed by a historical re-enactment of "Cleopatra - the Last Pharaoh of Egypt" performed by Martina Mathisen. Ladies of all ages are invited to attend the event and learn more about the club and its activities. Everybody is welcome and no registration is necessary.
The Membership Tea will kick off what will be a very busy year for the Mount Prospect Woman's Club. While the Village of Mount Prospect will begin celebrating its Centennial this fall and throughout 2017, the club will be celebrating its 90th anniversary during the same time period.
The Mount Prospect Woman's Club has been an integral part of Mount Prospect's 100-year history and continues its service to the village and its residents.
By soliciting door-to-door donations, the club spearheaded the campaign to build Mount Prospect's very first public library in 1943, which began as a collection of 300 secondhand books on a single tier of shelves housed in the one-room schoolhouse building.
In the 1950s, the club turned its attention to financing the construction of the bus shelter on Central Road.
Today, in addition to helping fulfill the needs of the Village of Mount Prospect, the club also awards college scholarships to graduating high school seniors and supports more than 20 local and global philanthropical organizations, as well as veterans, through various fundraisers and collections.
Several special events are planned for the 2016-2017 year, including the first Great Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge Nov. 12, which will be held at the Mount Prospect Village Hall from 2-5 p.m.
This is a communitywide event open to anybody who likes to do jigsaw puzzles. The rules are simple; everybody starts with the same 500-piece puzzle and whichever team finishes first wins the prize.
A 90th birthday party for the club is also planned for April, followed by the annual luncheon and fashion show in May, which this year will feature clothing from 1917 in celebration of Mount Prospect's Centennial.
Club meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at the Mount Prospect Village Hall, with lunch at noon, followed by a meeting and entertainment or a speaker. Guests are always welcome to attend, and you do not need to be a resident of Mount Prospect to become a member.
