Garden Club of Mount Prospect plants purple for Centennial

In honor of the upcoming Centennial celebration in Mount Prospect, the Garden Club of Mount Prospect is joining with professionals at the Mount Prospect Public Works Department, Randhurst Village and both the Mount Prospect and River Trails park districts to fill public gardens throughout the community with purple and white flowers in 2017. Purple is the official Centennial color.

Next year, residents will see purple and white flowers and foliage in public gardens, ranging from the Mount Prospect Historical Society and the Arlene Prchal Butterfly Garden at Moehling Park, both managed by the garden club, to public gardens in park facilities, around Randhurst Village and at the village's nearly 5,000 square feet of annual display beds in 12 locations.

During the Centennial year, the Public Works Department will add five additional annual display beds, all with a focus on a purple and white flowers and foliage.

Mount Prospect Public Works Department Grounds Foreman Victor Pierce has assembled a list of purple flowers that are likely to do well in local gardens and is sharing it with his colleagues, as well as the public.

"We are encouraging residents to join with us to plant purple and white in their home gardens, too," said Nancy Reese, president of the garden club. "We would like to see Mount Prospect awash in purple and white flowers next year."

The list of flowers is posted on the Centennial website, mountprospect100.com, and the garden club website, gcmp.weebly.com.

In addition, if community members would like to plant purple bulbs this fall for spring blooms, the Mount Prospect Historical Society is holding an online bulb sale/fundraiser through the end of September, which includes several purple choices.
