Dogs to have their day at Morton Arboretum

Visitors to the Morton Arboretum are invited to bring their furry friends to explore 16 miles of hiking trails, woodlands and prairies during Tails on the Trails.

Dogs are welcome from 7 a.m. to sunset Saturday, Sept. 10, at the arboretum, 4100 Route 53, Lisle. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tails on the Trails will feature dog-friendly activities including an agility course and demonstrations led by an expert dog trainer. Additionally, a pet expo will take place along Meadow Lake.

The day's events will include:

• Demonstrations on pet health and fitness, obedience and agility;

• Games for canines and their companions, including a peanut butter-licking contest;

• Guided hikes offered throughout the day;

• Pet products and services for sale at the pet expo; and

• The opportunity to meet dogs available for adoption and learn more about volunteering with local animal shelters.

"Arboretum visitors love this event because it allows the whole family to explore our wooded trails and take part in fun and interactive events geared to dogs and their people," special events coordinator Gina Steele said. "This event is a great chance for owners to learn more about taking care of their pets while having some outdoor fun."

The event costs $5 per dog plus regular admission fees for owners of $14 for adults, $12 for seniors 65 and older, $9 for ages 2 to 17, and free for younger children and members. Each dog will receive an arboretum bandanna with paid admission.

Dogs must have current vaccinations, get along with other animals, and be on leash at all times while on the arboretum property. Dogs must stay on marked trails and will not be allowed inside buildings, the Children's Garden or the Maze Garden. For information, visit mortonarb.org.
