Lombard retirement community unveils $19 million expansion
The Beacon Hill retirement community in Lombard has a fresh, new look.
Officials this week unveiled work completed as part of a $19 million expansion project, including a new 28,000-square-foot building that houses a theater, dining options and areas for entertainment and wellness activities. Construction on the new building and renovations to the community's main building at 2400 S. Finley Road began in August 2014.
Executive Director Blaire Goldstein said the changes were made to give Beacon Hill's more than 500 residents additional opportunities to enjoy an independent lifestyle.
"Today's seniors want more lifestyle options, engaging activities and easier access to health services, and we want to be out in front of what they're seeking," Goldstein said in a statement. "They also want more control of their future by having a plan in place so they won't burden their children or loved ones."
The new theater and auditorium will seat 175 people, allowing for more residents to enjoy weekly live entertainment. Expanded seating provides residents with more places to meet friends, play cards and read. Residents also will have more culinary choices, with the addition of a grab-and-go station and two updated dining areas.
In the main building, a fireplace was installed in the renovated lobby to add some warmth for visitors and families. Other improvements include an enclosed courtyard, a nearly completed gym with state-of-the-art equipment and a multipurpose space for staff training and resident meetings.
