Schaumburg man takes down treehouse, ash tree

A Schaumburg man who had planned to challenge two sets of village regulations by finishing building a partially completed 150-square-foot treehouse in a dead ash tree had his $100 fine dismissed this week after dismantling the structure and cutting down the tree.

Christopher Mooney maintained that the tree behind his home on Fairlane Drive could have been kept from deteriorating and that the treehouse-in-progress should have been grandfathered in by village officials.

The village last year enacted a new law limiting treehouses to 100 square feet and requiring they be at least 10 feet from a property line - both of which Mooney's exceeded. Officials also recently stepped up their enforcement of the required removal of trees killed by the emerald ash borer.
