Northwestern Mutual - Chicago partners with John Karzen Basketball to raise money for childhood cancer research

Kids playing basketball at the North Shore Racquet Club on a Saturday is a common sight, but on Saturday, August 13, the players will be part of a fundraising event that will help fight childhood cancer. The inaugural Northwestern Mutual - Chicago and John Karzen Basketball "Hoops for Hope" will feature both a clinic for children ages 5 to 10 and 3 on 3 tournaments for children ages 11 to 15. All proceeds will benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer, Northwestern Mutual's national philanthropic partner that is dedicated to eradicating childhood cancer.

"Every day, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer and parents are looking for treatment options," said Scott R. Evans, Managing Director of Northwestern Mutual - Chicago's Northbrook district office. "By raising funds we can support research into new treatments and cures so that in the future every child will be enjoying their summers and heading back to school in the fall."

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children from ages 1 to 19 in the U.S. Yet, childhood cancer research and services are vastly and consistently underfunded. Northwestern Mutual launched its Childhood Cancer Program in 2012 to accelerate the search for cures to childhood cancers and to provide support to families battling the disease.

"Hoops for Hope" will be held at the North Shore Racquet Club, located at 2860 Old Willow Road in Northbrook on Saturday, August 13. Parents are encouraged to pre-register their child online at https://www.alexslemonade.org/mypage/1250938. Check in for children ages 5 to 10 begins at 9:30 a.m. and the clinic will run from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The donation per child is $20.00. Check in for children ages 11 to 15 begins at 11:15 a.m. The 3 on 3 tournaments will begin at noon. Participants may register as a team, but that is not required. A gift will be provided for all those that pre-register and prizes will be awarded to the tournament winners.

About Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra "Alex" Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $100 million toward fulfilling Alex's dream of finding a cure, funding over 475 pediatric cancer research projects nationally.
