Redacted report sheds little light on Sandack resignation
Downers Grove police Tuesday released a heavily redacted report about an ongoing investigation into an "internet scam" reported by recently resigned state Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove.
Sandack first announced his surprise resignation Sunday, citing "cyber security issues." The report says Sandack talked with police about something that began July 7, but a narrative about the complaint is almost completely blacked out.
The report was released in response to a Daily Herald Freedom of Information Act request.
"There's not much we can share, because we don't want to compromise the investigation," Downers Grove Police Administrative Lt. Dave Bormann said.
"I want to be very clear that Mr. Sandack is the victim here," he said. "And as of now, that's all we can disclose."
Sandack hasn't returned multiple requests for comment since Sunday.
News about Sandack's resignation broke Sunday evening when he released a statement about his decision to give up his seat.
"It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of the 81st District for the past four years in Springfield," he said in the statement. "But after some cyber security issues arose, I began to re-evaluate my continued public service."
An Illinois State Police spokesman has said Sandack notified the department "that he believed his social media account may have been compromised."
"The ISP offered to provide any assistance or resources to the Downers Grove Police Department but have been informed by the Downers Grove Police Department that no assistance is needed," Master Sgt. Jason Bradley said. "The ISP does not have any involvement in this matter."
Gov. Bruce Rauner said Tuesday he didn't receive advance notice of Sandack's resignation. Sandack has been a vocal Rauner ally in the Illinois House.
"I really can't comment much on Mr. Sandack's situation," Rauner said at an unrelated event Tuesday outside Springfield. "I heard about it yesterday (Monday) morning, the same time I think most of you did. I'm not sure what all is going on there, so I can't comment."
Pressed on whether losing Sandack in the House was a political blow, Rauner said he hadn't talked to him.
"I have not spoken to the representative," Rauner said. "I've been traveling the state on term limits."
Rauner has been promoting his bid to implement term limits on state lawmakers.
