Midwest travel: U.S. Pizza Museum sets up shop at Logan Square's Whistler

Slice of heaven

There's a museum for pizza? You bet. Sort of. The U.S. Pizza Museum doesn't have a permanent physical home, but you can see items from its collection online and in pop-up exhibitions like the one at Whistler Storefront Gallery in Logan Square. The exhibit focuses on pizza pop culture and Logan Square pizzerias. Artifacts include video games about pizza, ShowBiz Pizza Place memorabilia, pizza-themed vinyl records and stuffed animals of retired pizzeria mascots. An opening party launches the show, with free pizza from Father & Son Restaurant, while supplies last, and entertainment by Chicago rapper and pizza enthusiast ShowYouSuck and DJ Charlie Coffeen of the band Sidewalk Chalk.

Rolling out the sidewalks

Twenty-nine businesses of Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood will line Clark Street with bargain goods, fashion, antiques, personal fitness offers and service specials at the annual Andersonville Summer Sidewalk Sale. You can't find this stuff at big box retailers: goods from Crossroads Trading; Chicago Dance Supply; Marguerite Gardens; Mercantile M; Milk Handmade; Orange Shoe Personal Fitness; Presence Women's Clothing and others. The annual Summer Sidewalk Sale also coincides with the Women & Children First (WCF) Used Book Sale.

Take me to the river

If Chicago's River North has anything, it's retail and restaurants. The 15th Taste of River North should suit all palates, from kids to foodies. Area eateries, merchants, artists and entertainers will line Ward Park along the Chicago River. Vendors from Da Lobsta and Ruth's Chris Steakhouse to Fannie May and Farmhouse will be offering sizable tasting portions. Music headliners include Lucky Boys Confusion at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sixteen Candles at 8 p.m. Saturday and Rod Tuffcurls & The Bench Press at 6 p.m. Sunday. Plus, there's the Lurie's Kids Activity Area and Echoes of Chicago's Arts on the Riverwalk featuring the work of local artists, artisans and craftspeople. Arrive early for morning workouts in the park hosted by East Bank Club.

Burning Cow?

You've heard of the Burning Man Festival in the Pacific Northwest? Well, the Midwest has the Burning Cow Music Festival in Door County, Wisconsin, featuring three days of live blues, alt-country, rock and jam bands. Headliners include Anthony Gomes on Thursday, Sweetkiss Momma on Friday and Biters on Saturday. Located on more than 40 acres of the Memorial grounds with rustic camping, hot showers, barbecue, beer and breakfast, the fest culminates with a massive wooden cow torched in the night.

The Janesville, Wisconsin, area gives you another reason to keep your eyes to the skies during a three-day gathering of World War II-era aircraft at the Heavy Bombers Weekend 2016. See B-29 FIFI, B-17 Aluminum Overcast, B-25 Yellow Rose, P-51 Mustang, C-45 Expeditor, T-6 Texans and many more. Tour aircraft and other exhibits on the ground or take a ride in your favorite aircraft. There will be food vendors, a beer and wine tent, merchandise vendors, World War II re-enactments and 1940s-era music.

Festa Italiana, Milwaukee's largest Italian festival, serves up Italian food, entertainment, culture and more. Don't miss, direct from Italy, the Flag-Throwers of the Florentine performing formations and exercises used in battle in medieval Italy. Play bocce ball, take a gondola ride, and try authentic Italian fare from gelato and pizza to sausage sliders and octopus salad. Entertainment includes opera, doo-wop and plenty of crooners.

Shake the Lake

Lake Lawn Resort in nearby Delavan, Wisconsin, presents a three-day Shake the Lake Music Festival of tribute bands, '80s music (with a costume contest) and classic rock. Get in on the Walworth County Bags Tournament Championship, carnival games and food truck fare.
