New Kids' Castle playground opens in Vernon Hills
Scores of kids and their parents celebrated the official opening Sunday of the Vernon Hills Park District's new Kids' Castle playground in Deerpath Park.
The original castle-themed playground was dismantled last fall because of rotted wood, beehives and outdated equipment that no longer met National Playground Safety Standards. The new version is about the same size at 8,500 square feet but also fully accessible to children with disabilities. It has a variety of new features, including a spongy surface and a permanent bathroom.
Vernon Hills village trustees and Vernon Hill Park District commissioners spoke at the event. Kids enjoyed ice cream cups from Bobo's restaurants as others played on the new equipment.
BASE Limousine and Lakeland Plastics Inc. contributed to the Kids' Castle Playground development.
Vernon Hills resident Amy Lamberti was recognized for coordinating the volunteer efforts.
