Crystal Lake youths to get free meals this summer

A summer meals program which started Monday, June 6, offers free, nutritious lunches to Crystal Lake youth at various sites in town.

The program is sponsored by Summer Lunch Volunteers and Northern Illinois Food Bank with the support of the Crystal Lake Park District.

Boxed lunches and milk will be served from 11:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at Ladd Park on Devonshire Lane in Crystal Lake. The program is open to students younger than 18 years old and will run through Aug. 25.

Coventry Elementary, at 820 Darlington Lane in Crystal Lake, also will serve free breakfast and lunch to Crystal Lake youths under 18 during its summer school program, which runs July 25 through Aug. 12. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday in the school's cafeteria.

MCC employee wins 40 Under 40 Award:

McHenry County College employee Talia Koronkiewicz recently was recognized as part of the first American Association for Women in Community Colleges 40 Under 40 class.

Koronkiewicz, of Crystal Lake, was selected for being a rising star who makes a difference on the community college campus. The 40 honorees include faculty, counselors, administrators and staff members at colleges nationwide who raise the bar for excellence. These women were honored for their creativity, innovation, leadership and achievements.

Koronkiewicz, MCC's manager of student life and conduct, takes an educational approach to her work, developing programs that will interest, engage, and educate students.

She helps faculty members develop skills for dealing proactively with student disciplinary problems. When a student discipline situation arises, she serves as a mediator calming both sides down to work toward a resolution. She also gives presentations to employees as part of the Behavior Intervention Team.

Koronkiewicz is a member of Leadership Greater McHenry County, serving on the Curriculum Committee. She graduated in May 2016 with her doctorate in Community College Leadership from Ferris State University. She earned a master's degree from Ball State University and a bachelor of science degree from Carroll University. She has won a variety of awards, including the Illinois Council of Community College Administrators Leadership Award & Scholarship in 2015, the McHenry County College Professional Staff Member of the Year Award in 2010 and the National Association of Campus Activities Outstanding New Professional Award in 2008.
