Where can you get rid of a TV?

The days of free recycling of electronic items in Kane County are over.

So if you care enough about the environment to responsibly dispose of your old television set or cathode-ray-tube computer monitor, get your checkbook out.

"They (residents) are going to have to get over it," recycling coordinator Jennifer Jarland said of people paying for disposal.

The county suggests the following businesses. Some offer pickup service; others take drop-offs. Fees vary from $13 to more than $50, often based on the size of the item.

State list

The state Environmental Protection Agency regulates waste collectors, recyclers and refurbishes. It maintains a registry of authorized entities, at epadata.epa.state.il.us/land/eWaste/crr-list. asp. It suggests customers call ahead to determine what items the business takes.
