Shakhtar Donetsk hires Paulo Fonseca as new head coach
LVIV, Ukraine (AP) - Former Porto coach Paulo Fonseca has been appointed the new coach of Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk.
Fonseca replaces longtime Shakhtar boss Mircea Lucescu, who won the UEFA Cup and eight domestic titles during 12 years with the club before moving to Zenit St. Petersburg earlier this month.
The 43-year-old Fonseca said in a statement he would follow in Lucescu's footsteps and play "beautiful, high-quality football."
Fonseca coached Porto in the 2013-14 season. He finished fourth with Braga in the Portuguese league this season and beat Porto to win the Portuguese cup earlier this month.
Shakhtar, which was second in the Ukrainian league this season, has played its home games in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv since its home city of Donetsk was captured by Russian-backed separatists in 2014.
