Schaumburg Offers Public Biking Events in May

The Village of Schaumburg will hold two annual biking events in May that are free and open to the public to help celebrate National Bike Month.

To recognize Bike to Work Week May 16-20, the Village of Schaumburg is encouraging the public to bike to their respective workplaces as a way to encourage sustainability, realize economic savings, reduce obesity and increase mobility options.

On Friday, May 20 at 9:30 a.m., the public is invited to join Schaumburg President Al Larson who will lead the annual ride to work.

The route will begin at Meineke Recreation Facility's bike path at 220 E. Weathersfield Way. From there, participants will ride with President Larson to Beech Drive, east on Beech to Abrahamsen Park, through Abrahamsen Park to Summit, north on Summit to the bike path entrance onto the municipal center grounds.

The public is also invited to participate in the popular Fahrrad Tour von Schaumburg. The event, which is sponsored by the Village of Schaumburg and the Schaumburg Park District, will kick off at noon on Sunday, May 22 from Blackwell Elementary School, 345 North Walnut Lane.

Participants will ride in a police-guided tour approximately seven miles utilizing both on and off-street bike paths between Blackwell Elementary School and the end destination at the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center, 101 Schaumburg Court. Beginners and riders with training wheels are not advised to participate.

Before riding, all participants must sign a liability waiver, which will be available prior to the start of the event at Blackwell Elementary School. Immediately following the ride, a picnic-style lunch will be served and musical entertainment provided by a DJ who will participate in games with the children.

Schaumburg Park District will begin transporting participants and their bicycles back to Blackwell Elementary School at 1:45 p.m., or participants are free to ride their bicycles back to their homes.
