Celebrate Migratory Bird Day at Willowbrook Wildlife Center

Novice and experienced bird-watchers alike are invited to mark the spring migration during International Migratory Bird Day Celebration from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 14, at Willowbrook Wildlife Center, 525 S. Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn.

"You don't have to be an expert birder to appreciate our feathered friends and the miraculous trip they make every spring," said Joe Cantore, president of the DuPage County Forest Preserve District.

The free event features a variety of activities for kids and adults throughout the morning.

• Bird Walk for Adults, 8 to 9:30 a.m. Visitors on this naturalist-led hike will search for feathered jewels during the peak of warbler migration. Ages 12 and older; younger than 18 with an adult. New birders are welcome.

• Bird-Banding Demo, 9 to 11 a.m. (weather permitting). Visitors will see how ecologists band birds and how banding helps scientists worldwide. All ages.

• Family Bird Walk, 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Join a naturalist and learn tips for bird-watching. Ages 8 and older; younger than 18 with an adult.

Visitors should bring binoculars if possible; a limited number will be available for loan. Registration is not required for the event. For more information, call Willowbrook at (630) 942-6200 or visit dupageforest.org.

"This popular spring tradition offers lots of fun for the whole family and a chance to learn more about the birds that visit DuPage County," said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Tim Whelan, District 4.
