Softball: Diaz, Mundelein excel in sweep of Hersey
Amanda Diaz homered in both games, and Mundelein's softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from visiting Hersey, winning by identical 7-6 scores on Mundelein Baseball and Softball Association day Saturday.
Karlee Busscher's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth snapped a 6-6 tie in the opener. Diaz, Breanna Adams (double) and Jordyn West were all 2-for-4, and Peyton Pribyl was 2-for-3.
Nicole Parney pitched all 7 innings for the win, striking out three and walking two.
In Game 2, besides Diaz, Adams also homered, as Mundelein improved to 6-14.
Busscher finished 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Diaz also doubled, going 2-for-3. Adams pitched 6⅓ innings to earn the victory. Parney got the final two outs for the save.
Marist sweeps Carmel Catholic: The defending Class 4A state champs won 16-5 and 10-0 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader.
Amanda Elert belted a three-run homer for Carmel (12-7, 0-2) in the first game, and Emma Bartz homered as well for the Corsairs.
Lake Zurich 15, McHenry 7: Lake Zurich out-hit McHenry 15-7 and Sarah Schnecker and Jessie Puccinelli each had 3 hits to lead the way.
Amanda Guercio, MacKenzie Brinn and Julia Zaucha added 2 hits apiece for the Bears.
Winning pitcher Stephanie Keefe went the distance and had 2 strikeouts.
Libertyville 3, Fremd 2: At the Libertyville Quad, Libertyville out-hit Fremd 6-3.
Wauconda sweeps: Wauconda got an 11-5 win over Fremd and a 9-4 win over Huntley.
Against Fremd, Kayla Wedl, Brooke Sefcik, Sarah Ricci and Mallory Carver each had home runs for the Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, Taylor McCarthy and Alexandra Steffens each finished with 2 hits.
Wedl, the winning pitcher, rolled up 13 strikeouts to just 1 walk.
Against Huntley, Wedl had 2 home runs and drove in 5 runs.
Winning pitcher Kayla Serio didn't give up a walk over 4 2/3 innings.
Vernon Hills 10, Niles West 1: Delaney Bowen finished with 3 hits, including a double, to lead Vernon Hills.
Danielle Comitor, Tatiana Guletsky and Anna Cirone each added 2 hits for the Cougars.
Comitor, the winning pitcher, went the distance and gave up just 1 walk while recording 4 strikeouts.
Lakes 5, Grayslake Central 0: Kelsey Ulrich smacked a double and Allyson Perdue drove in 2 runs to lead Lakes.
Perdue was also the winning pitcher, striking out 3 batters over seven innings.
For Grayslake Central, Tegan Truskowski, Morgan Smigielski and Lexi Waigand each had one of the team's 3 hits.
