Strong Spring for the Illinois Fencers Club Fencers

The Illinois Fencers Club (IFC) fencers have had strong presence at tournaments this spring. The club held its D & Under and Y12 tournament with events in epee, foil and saber on March 20th. IFC fencer Jakub Nowak won the mixed foil event with 25 fencers competing, earning a C'16 rating, and Kaitlin Oh won the Y12 epee, while Geoff Brzezowski captured the silver medal in senior mixed epee.

IFC also held its E & Under and Y12 tournament with events in all three weapons on February 22, where Geoff Brzezowski won the senior mixed epee, Peter Kulaga took 2nd in senior mixed foil. In the youth epee event, Kaitlin and Mathew Oh finished 2nd and 3rd.

IFC fencers swept the Milwaukee Sport Fencing Academy's "Steel Thyself" Mixed Epee Open on April 3rd. Peter Kulaga won first place, John Lartz finished second, and Anna Paul placed third in the tournament.

In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, IFC fencer Peter Kulaga won a bronze medal in Y14 epee and finished in 5th place in cadet foil at the Toronto Challenge on March 26th and 27th.

DIV. II EPEE

The Illinois Fencers Club is holding its popular Dominick Epee Challenge on Sunday, May 1, at the Lions Recreation Center in Mount Prospect. Competition in the following events is scheduled with over 100 fencers anticipated: Senior Women's Epee, Senior Mixed Epee, Y-12 Mixed Epee, and Senior Mixed Team Epee. Last year's silver medalist in the mixed event, Deon Bradford (IFC), is coming back, as well as the winner in the women's event, Rachel Mau (Caliburn). This is the largest epee-only tournament in the Chicago area for the last four years and an A2 and higher rated event sanctioned by the Illinois Division. This year the 2016 winner of the mixed epee will receive a $100 fencing gift card.

The Illinois Fencers Club promotes and teaches the Olympic sport of fencing to students of all ages and skill levels and provides a friendly venue for members to practice their sport. It is a member operated not-for-profit sports association that has been serving beginning, recreational, and competitive fencers for more than 40 years.

IFC offers affordable classes with high quality instruction for kids, youth, and adults in several skill levels and offers three clinics for advanced competitive fencers each year. The athlete-centered Youth Program promotes athletic excellence and personal growth. It teaches self-awareness, responsibility, resilience and cooperation to assist fencers in reaching athletic, academic and personal success.

While fencing is typically one a costly sports, IFC is committed to providing access to our favorite sport for reasonable fees. The current membership fee is only $225 per year, providing the opportunity to fence 7 to 8 hours per week, 12 months a year.

Illinois Fencers Club is open to visitors Monday or Thursday evenings in the lower level of the Lions Recreation Center at 411 S. Maple Street, Mount Prospect, Illinois, just three blocks from the Metra station.
