Quenneville: Learn from Shaw's mistake
ST. LOUIS - While Joel Quenneville said he hopes everyone has learned a lesson from Andrew Shaw screaming a gay slur at officials late in the Blackhawks' Game 4 loss to St. Louis, the coach also hopes his team has been paying attention to how Shaw has played in this series.
Shaw has been his typical tough, hard-nosed, annoying self and it's paid huge dividends. Both of Shaw's goals against the Blues came on plays in which the winger was standing directly in front of goalie Brian Elliott.
The Hawks were without Shaw for Game 5, though, as the NHL handed him a one-game suspension for his Game 4 antics.
"We're going to miss (him) a lot," Patrick Kane said. "He's a passionate kid and he plays the game that way too. Hopefully we can fill the void."
Shaw has mostly skated on the fourth line during the series, although he did play on the top line during the first period of Game 4.
The Blues certainly understood how much the Hawks would miss Shaw.
"He's an agitator," said Troy Brouwer. "He goes out there and hits. He does a lot of good things for them.
"I don't know how their lineup (is) going to fill out or how they're going to miss him, but it's an important player that's not going to be playing tonight."
Mix and match:
David Rundblad replaced Michal Rozsival on the Hawks' blue line for Game 5. It was the first time Rundblad played for the Hawks since Dec. 13.
Brandon Mashinter returned to the series for the first time since Game 1.
Tomas Fleischmann was a healthy scratch for the first time in the series.
Slap shots:
Going into Thursday's action, Vladimir Tarasenko had scored 13 goals in 17 playoff games. That 0.76 per-game average ranks No. 1 in NHL history among players who have played in at least 15 postseason games. … Patrick Kane, who has 4 assists in this series, now has 70 in his postseason career. That moved him past Bobby Hull and into third place in Blackhawks history. Stan Mikita is first with 91, and Denis Savard second with 84. … Before Thursday's Game 5, the Blackhawks were 11-3 when facing elimination since 2010.
He said it:
"He might not weigh much more than my wife, but he's a spitfire. A guy who's got a lot of edge to him. He loves to battle."
