Voters can change how townships operate
I enjoyed the story about unspent cash in townships by Daily Heralds Jake Griffin April 13. It goes far beyond road districts.
In Wauconda Township, over $1.2 million has been held for years in a fund called "land purchase building reserve."
Townships are an antiquated form of government that has three directives, which are: provide assistance to the elderly, assess property tax and maintain the unincorporated roads. Some townships provide huge salary and benefit packages to the old-boy network of elected officials, while spending tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees to block the taxpayers' voice at annual meetings.
Wauconda Township used the taxpayer-funded newsletter to mislead residents about the responsibility for ending the electronic recycling program. It was implied that the State of Illinois cut funding when truthfully SWALCO funds the program through electronic manufactures. Wauconda had plenty of reserves to self fund the program.
Township elections will be held in April 2017 and I feel we need to change the way township boards operate throughout Lake County.
Please vote for change.
