Holi festival celebrated in Vernon Hills
More than 700 people attended the Festival of Colors Celebration of Holi hosted by the Vernon Hills Indian Association Saturday, April 9, at Century Park North in Vernon Hills.
The sun was bright and festivities continued with children's activities, food and performances by small children as well as Arya & Dwance Dance Academy.
After months of planning, the event brought out the best of the Vernon Hills Indian Association board members and its volunteers.
Anshul Bindal, president of the association, said "The Holi event was a grand success." Bindal also said that the association includes around 100 families who are active members, and it is growing.
Many locals and people from all parts of Chicagoland, including southern Wisconsin and Indiana, attended the event along with guests such as Congressman Bob Dold, Vernon Hills Mayor Roger Byrne, Lake County State's Attorney Mike Nerhiem, U.S. Senator Mark Kirk and many others.
Mehul Rami energized the ambience with his dhol - a type of drum - while music expert Peter Jakal was calibrating the sound system. There was a cloud of colors while participants enjoyed dancing to the Bollywood rhythms and Holi songs.
The event also included a food drive.
Association member Kapil Sabharwal said, "What a great show, best Holi ever in U.S. Kuddos to super leadership and teamwork."
