Boys volleyball: Fremd's Pinley picks up career victory No. 800

Fremd boys volleyball coach Curt Pinley reached a big career milestone on Tuesday as the Vikings came up with a 25-27, 25-21 victory over Hoffman Estates.

It was career coaching victory No. 800 for Pinley. Of that total, 381 wins have come while he was coaching girls teams.

The decision helped Fremd improve to 2-0 this spring and grab an early share of the Mid-Suburban West lead at 1-0.

Matt Lebiedzinski led Fremd with 5 kills while Pavel Warzecha and Kyle Saxon had 4 apiece. Aaron Kuhlman served up 5 aces in a 14-for-15 effort, Kaleb Scharman had 15 setting assists and Patrick Kurka had a team-best 21 digs.

For Hoffman Estates, Miguel Pineda had a team-best 3 kills and 7 digs, T.J. Rodgers provided 5 assists and James Swan went 6-for-6 serving with an ace.

Hersey d. Prospect: The visiting Huskies came up with a big third set to claim a win in their MSL East opener, topping the Knights 25-18, 22-25, 25-16.

Angelo Coniglio (15 kills) and John Bouvier (11) led a potent Hersey attack directed by setter Vince Reisel (33 assists, 3 blocks) and the Huskies got big defensive efforts from Justin Hong (16 digs) and Collin Mallers (13 digs).

Scott Backus had 18 assists for Prospect, which got 7 kills and 8 digs from Quinn Benson and 6 kills from Liam Benson.

Barrington d. Conant: Mikey Stefan (8 kills), Josh Babicz (7) and TJ Murray (6) led the Broncos in a 25-18, 25-16 victory in an MSL West opener. Evan Carroll handed out 11 assists while Matt Rowley had 6 and Jack Ridgway 5.

Stefan's 11 digs paced the Broncos' back row followed by Stephen Wanca (8) and Ethan Carroll (6).

Buffalo Grove d. Elk Grove: The host Bison picked up a victory in their Mid-Suburban East opener 25-25, 26-24.

Danny Zickert (6 kills), Chris Tsourans, Zach Schnittker (5) and Ryan Horvath and Ian VanWazer (3 apiece) led the attack, while Schnittker provided 22 assists and Greg Schneider went 17-for-18 serving with an ace for the winners.

Connor Emerich and Shivam Patel led the attack for Elk Grove, while Anthony Prochenski provided 15 digs along with a 13-for-13 serve reception effort. Ed Gonzalez went 45-for-46 setting with 14 assists and also was 12-for-12 serving with an ace.

Palatine d. Schaumburg: The host Pirates eked out a tough 3-setter against the Saxons in MSL West play.

Jake Boldog led the Pirates with 7 kills and 15 assists. Both he and Zack Wheat had 3 blocks; Wheat also had 4 kills and went 14-for-14 serving with 2 aces. Andrew Padilla went 19-for-20 serving with 4 aces for Palatine, and Johnny O'Shea was 12-for-12 with 1 ace.

Schaumburg (0-6) got a team-best 12 kills from Dan Kaszuba and 7 from Andrew Norris. Nic Lazarevic contributed 15 digs, Sam Smith had 28 assists and Kamron Groves had 4 blocks.
