Free April Films at the Northbrook Library

The Northbrook Library's Classics on Wednesday Film Series is showing Rogers & Hammerstein in April, as well as a pre-DVD release showing of "The Revenant" and a special showing of "Kung Fu Panda 3" for families!

"Oklahoma!" (1955)

Set in the Oklahoma Territory in the early 1900's, this joyous celebration of frontier life is a story of tender romance and dangerous passion. Gordon MacRae is Curly, a sunny, good-natured ranch hand, and Shirley Jones is Laurey Williams, the farmer's daughter he loves. Rod Steiger is he menacing Jud, who tries to comes between them. The first Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration, this Academy Award winner for Best Score features the classic songs "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top" and "People Will Say We're In Love." 145 minutes. Oscar Winner for Best Actor, Best Director, & Best Cinematography. Inspired by true events, The Revenant is an epic story of survival and transformation on the American frontier. While on an expedition into the uncharted wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally mauled by a bear, then abandoned by members of his own hunting team. Alone and near death, Glass refuses to succumb. Driven by sheer will and his love for his Native American wife and son, he undertakes a 200-mile odyssey through the vast and untamed West on the trail of the man who betrayed him: John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). What begins as a relentless quest for revenge becomes a heroic saga against all odds towards home and redemption. Presented in DCP. 156 minutes.

"Carousel" (1956)

Filmed on location in a beautiful seaside village, stars Gordon MacRae as Billy Bigelow, a smooth-talking carny man who falls in love with a millworker (Shirley Jones). Tragedy strikes these star-crossed lovers, and their journey is not easy. With a score that includes "If I Loved You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone," it's little wonder that Carousel was composer Richard Rodgers' personal favorite. 128 minutes.Presented in CinemaScope-55 & 4K DCP

"The King and I" (1956)

Tells the true story of an Englishwoman, Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr), who comes to Siam as schoolteacher to the royal court in the 1860s. Though she soon finds herself at odds with the stubborn monarch (Yul Brynner), over time, Anna and the King stop trying to change each other and begin to understand one another. 133 minutes. "South Pacific" (1958)
