Support appreciated after officer's death

As you may know, approximately one month ago, the Vernon Hills Police Department experienced a deep loss with the untimely death of Officer Andy Rheintgen. To say that we miss him doesn't accurately describe the deep sense of loss that will be felt among us for a very long time.

During the days immediately following Andy's death, the members of this agency were greatly touched by the overwhelming support that was demonstrated by the public. Whether it was cookies that were dropped off, a card that was received, a kind word of support (either in person or on social media) or standing on the side of the road as the funeral procession passed, each and every action was very much appreciated. On behalf of every member of the Vernon Hills Police Department - thank you very much!

I would also like to publicly thank the many agencies that assisted with traffic control during the funeral procession. The cooperation that was received from each agency ensured that we (and Andy's family) could safely give him a proper farewell and do it with minimal inconvenience to the community.

Mark G. Fleischhauer, Chief of Police
