Man charged in armed robbery of Round Lake gas station
Round Lake police say a man has been charged in connection with an armed robbery of a gasoline station last week.
Police announced Friday that Wendell E. Wells, 55, of Fox Lake, has been charged with armed robbery, aggravated robbery, theft and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Wells remained in the Lake County jail Friday on 10 percent of a $250,000 bail.
The suspect displayed a black handgun and took an unspecified amount of cash when he hit the Marathon gas station at 1175 W. Route 134 about 1:45 p.m. Friday, March 4, according to authorities. Police said they were told the suspect fled in a dark-green Nissan Xterra southbound on Fairfield Road from Route 134.
Round Lake police said Wells was taken into custody at his Fox Lake house about 7 p.m. on day of the robbery. Tips from the public and a police investigation led Wells' arrest, authorities said.
