Ex-Bears running back Forte to play for New York Jets

Matt Forte, the No. 2 career rusher in Bears franchise history, will sign with the New York Jets, according to ESPN and NFLNetwork reports.

Forte, who turned 30 in December, was informed last month that the Bears would not be bidding for his services in 2016. He has the most yards from scrimmage (12,718) in the NFL since he was drafted in 2008 by the Bears in the second round (44th overall) out of Tulane.

Forte missed three games last season after having missed just five in the previous seven seasons, and his 898 rushing yards were the fewest for a single season in his eight-year career. Forte's 44 receptions last season tied for his career low and represented a drop-off of 58 from 2014, when he established the NFL record for a running back with 102 catches.

Forte is expected to be the primary replacement for Chris Ivory, who agreed to a five-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier.
