Cantigny celebrates Women's History Month
Cantigny Park will mark March as Women's History Month with two free events at 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton.
• The Robert R. McCormick Museum begins its 2016 Second Saturday series with a celebration of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 12, in the museum's Gold Theatre. Visitors can make suffragette sashes and pins, and visit a mock voting booth to make their voices heard.
Second Saturday is a free drop-in (open house format) program for families with a different theme each month; no registration is necessary.
• Historian/actress Leslie Goddard portrays pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 21, in the Visitors Center Theater. Earhart's courageous exploits and spirited personality made her an international celebrity in the early 20th century. She was the first female aviator to cross the Atlantic by plane and later accomplished the feat flying solo, earning the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross.
The program is free but registration is required; visit cantigny.org or call (630) 260-8162. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with food and drink available for purchase.
Visitors may also purchase copies of "Amelia Lost: The Life and Disappearance of Amelia Earhart" by Candace Fleming (2011) in the Cantigny Shop.
Parking at Cantigny is $5.
