Marianjoy, Northwestern close deal

About 1,000 workers from Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital joined Northwestern Memorial HealthCare on Tuesday when Northwestern's acquisition closed on the Wheaton-based health care system.

The deal includes Marianjoy's hospital and outpatient clinics, the Marianjoy Medical Group and Marianjoy Foundation. Marianjoy's Kathleen Yosko also will remain as president of the hospital, said Northwestern spokesman Christopher King.

"We do not anticipate any layoffs," King said. "In fact, we believe we need more talent not less for our growing health system."

Northwestern and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare signed a letter of intent to transfer Marianjoy in October 2015. The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved the change in ownership in December 2015.

Marianjoy Hospital will remain in its current location.

"Patients should expect to see the same high quality care that Marianjoy has been providing since 1972," King said. "We believe the addition of Marianjoy to our system will enhance our care continuum for patients throughout our system and provide patients with even greater access to specialize care that is currently offered by Marianjoy."

The 127-bed nonprofit teaching hospital is at 26W171 Roosevelt Road in Wheaton. It was founded in 1972 by the Wheaton Franciscan sisters and provides rehabilitation services. The facilities help people with strokes, neuromuscular problems, brain injury and other medical problems.

Northwestern is based in Chicago and Lake Forest and has seven hospitals and more than 100 locations, including Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, among others.
