Get your order in for annual conservation plant sale

The Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for its annual Conservation Plant Sale.

The sale includes various evergreen and deciduous bare-root trees and shrubs; prairie or pond plant packages; and single-pot shade and prairie plants. Prices vary depending on species.

Native trees, container grown whips with some branching sold singly in one-gallon containers for $7-$9, include: hackberry, sugar maple, swamp white oak, bur oak, black walnut, American hornbeam, tulip tree, red bud, white pine, and Black Hills spruce.

Deciduous shrubs, sold singly and bare root for $14-$20, include: gray dogwood, ninebark, fragrant sumac, staghorn sumac, American cranberry bush, nannyberry, shadblow serviceberry, elderberry, common witchhazel, American plum, hazelnut, Redosier dogwood, dwarf honeysuckle, and red chokeberry.

Bundles of trees for $12-$15 include: Kentucky coffee tree, Chinquapin oak, butternut, and Wahoo tree.

Evergreen trees (offered bare root, purchased in bundles of 10, can be planted singly or in grouping) for $17-$18 include: white pine, concolor fir, Douglas fir, Colorado blue spruce, Norway spruce, Black Hills spruce.

Native woodland plants, sold singly in pots for $5-$9, include: Jack-in-the-Pulpit, wild geranium, Virginia waterleaf, woodland phlox, bellwort, maidenhair fern, and Christmas fern.

Single prairie plants, sold singly in pots for $4-$7, include: butterfly milkweed, marsh milkweed, meadow anemone, and Indian grass.

They also offer prairie and pond packages for $65, and conservation books.

Call before Tuesday, March 8 , to receive the catalog.

Ordering deadline for trees and shrubs is Sunday, March 20. Deadline for prairie plants is Wednesday, April 27. The pick-up for trees and shrubs will on April 20 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kane County Fairgrounds, off Randall Road in St. Charles.

Prairie and shade plants will be distributed on May 18 at the Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District office, 2315 Dean St. Suite 100, St. Charles from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
