Expecting a scolding from the chairman
As a former Kane County Board member, I am embarrassed as I watch with interest the struggle of Coroner Rob Russell, as he deals with the county board and Chairman Chris Lauzen.
As a one time member of Mr. Lauzen's inner circle, I know that Rob Russell was never Lauzen's choice for coroner. But since his election, Russell has worked very hard to treat this office with dignity, integrity and honesty.
It saddens me that those of us that must rely on the services of the Coroner's office, must view our loved ones for the last time in a small, dark, narrow hallway. I'm saddened that the remains of loved ones are stored in refurbished freezers and I'm saddened that the equipment used is less than state of the art.
None of this is Mr. Russell's fault. He has tried time and again to get the board to address these issues, only to be shut down by the chairman and his foot soldiers. The office is in dire need of major repair. It has been plagued with mold issues, broken equipment,, all inherited by Mr. Russell, who has worked hard to keep the office running with little or no support from this county board. I have to ask why?
When Mr. Lauzen ran for chairman, one of his platforms was to treat people respectfully. He has been a disappointment to so many of his past supporters. His relentless threats have paralyzed this board. As I write this letter I know that I should expect a phone call from the chairman scolding me for airing dirty laundry, but it's time that people hear the truth.
We have found the money to build a shooting range. The coroner's office should be a priority. Why isn't it?
