Waukegan students learn about health careers

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science students recently visited Waukegan High School to offer a health care careers fair.

More than a dozen graduate students pursuing degrees in medicine, physician assistant, pharmacy, pathologists' assistant, podiatry and research discussed their academic paths and career goals with WHS students and answered questions.

The fair was hosted Feb. 20 by Health Care Explorations for Local Student Populations, an initiative of the RFU-based Franklin Fellowship, which serves to develop a community of students committed to interprofessional service, leadership and educational excellence.

Franklin Fellow Lauren Golding, a first-year physician assistant student, created the service project.

"I would have benefitted from something like this," said Golding, a native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. "Students need to know how they can get on the path to health care careers. The fastest way to learn is to ask questions of people in those academic programs."

The career fair also allowed RFU students the opportunity "to reach out to a community they may not know," Golding said.

"It's important to open the door to students who may want to pursue careers in health care, but lack awareness and opportunity," she said.

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, 3333 Green Bay Road, North Chicago, is a national leader in interprofessional medical and health care education, offering a doctor of medicine degree through the Chicago Medical School; doctor of podiatric medicine degree through the Dr. William M.
