Less than accurate about accomplishments?

As we enter the political campaign season, one would hope that candidates try to share an accurate picture of their accomplishments. I have been contacted by many people regarding District 4 county board candidate Tim Elliott, who is taking credit for the hard work others have done at the DuPage Water Commission.

As we all know, the commission had some serious financial and oversight issues. Following thorough investigations and a forensic audit in 2010, it was determined that the water commission had been run poorly and that major changes were needed immediately. With those recommendations in hand, the "new" water commission board started work on Jan. 1, 2011.

We were charged with clearing $142 million in debt, replacing senior management and forging a new, transparent and accountable path forward.

The mere fact that Mr. Elliott is taking credit for positive changes made by the members of "today's" water commission is a stretch at best. Those who served on the previous board knew they were going to be replaced January 1, 2011. Any major changes waited until the new board was selected and took office. Tim Elliott was not one of those selected to continue on the water commission board.

Five years later, I am proud to report that the water commission will be debt free on June 1, 2016. We have new management and policies. We have reduced staff, cut spending and truly transformed the agency so that it is soon to be self-sustaining utility. Thanks to the diligent work of the current board and staff, this is an outstanding example of a real turnaround in local government. I can truthfully report to the voters of DuPage County that Mr. Elliott played no role in this effort.
