Oakton joins campaign to end violence against women

Join Oakton Community College students and employees as they unite together with millions from around the world Thursday, Feb. 11, to demand an end to brutality against women by rising and dancing.

Open to the public, a "flash mob" dance will begin at noon in the main lobby of the college's campuses in Des Plaines, 1600 E. Golf Road, and Skokie, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave.

The free event is part of One Billion Rising, a day of action coordinated by V-Day, a global activist movement that generates attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest and sex slavery. Approximately 6,000 V-Day events are held annually across the globe.

V-Day continues at Oakton with three benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues" at the Studio One Theater at the Des Plaines campus.

Sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program and the Performing Arts Department, these staged readings of Eve Ensler's masterpiece delve into the deepest secrets and fantasies of women around the world. Proceeds from "The Vagina Monologues" will raise funds and awareness about the brutality against females.

Show times are 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, and Saturday, Feb. 13, and 2 p.m. Sunday Feb. 14. Tickets are $12, $8 for students and seniors. To order, visit www.oakton.edu/tickets and click "purchase online now," or call (847) 635-1900.
