Two plead not guilty to kidnapping in Spring Grove

Two Spring Grove residents pleaded not guilty to charges they abducted a woman at gunpoint, beat her for two days, and held her against her will.

Dvino E. Thomas, 30, and Jori A. Urgo, 21, of 39200 block of North Jackson Drive, individually pleaded not guilty in front of Judge Daniel Shanes to charges of aggravated kidnapping, unlawful restraint and aggravated battery in Lake County court Thursday.

Thomas is also charged with aggravated domestic battery and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Both were given a May 9 trial date.

According to police, the victim was at the North Jackson Drive residence Dec. 27, when she got into an argument with Thomas.

During the dispute, Thomas and Urgo punched the victim, and Thomas struck her in the face with an object, authorities said.

The victim told authorities Thomas threatened her with a gun and said he'd kill her if she left the home or notified police. He also took her car keys and refused to let her leave, according to the sheriff's office.

The victim was able to leave the residence Dec. 29. She went to a hospital for treatment for a broken nose, bruises, and a broken eye socket.

She filed a report with the sheriff's office Jan. 8, officials said. Thomas was arrested at his home Jan. 11, and Urgo was picked up in Ingleside on Jan. 12.

If found guilty of the most serious charge, each could face 6 to 30 years in prison.

Both are held in Lake County jail. Thomas' bail remains at $750,000 and Urgo's bail is $250,000. Each is required to post 10 percent to be released while their cases are pending.

Urgo is due back in court March 4 for a pretrial hearing. Thomas is due back in court Feb. 19 for bond review.
