Pedestrian identified in Antioch fatal crash

A pedestrian struck and killed by a car Monday in Antioch has been identified by police as Daniel R. Reick, 66, authorities said Wednesday.

Reick, of Antioch, was crossing Route 173 carrying a shovel at 5:15 p.m. when he was hit by a Ford sedan traveling east, Antioch police Cmdr. Rick Moritz said.

Moritz said Reick was walking from the nearby Wal-Mart parking lot to his vehicle, which had become stuck in ice in the parking lot of the Aldi grocery store located directly across the road.

The investigation shows the driver of the sedan saw Reick standing on the middle median, Moritz said. The driver changed lanes away from the median, but Reick appeared in front of his car after he switched lanes, Moritz said.

Reick was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

The driver of the Ford was taken to a hospital and later released, authorities said. He has not been charged and the crash remains under investigation, officials said.
