DeKeyser scores in OT to help Red Wings beat Coyotes 3-2
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The matchup of top rookies wasn't decided until overtime, when Detroit's Dylan Larkin got the better of Max Domi to give the Red Wings an improbable victory that left the Coyotes fuming.
Larkin spun away from Domi, skated behind the net, into the right corner and back before feeding Danny DeKeyser for the winning wrist shot with 2:52 left. Larkin's latest dazzling play and Detroit's two third-period power-play goals gave the Red Wings a 3-2 victory over Arizona on Thursday night.
"I just tried to build up as much speed as possible," Larkin said of his 16th assist. "I saw (Oliver) Ekman-Larsson and Domi, so I decided to go after Domi. It's tough for a forward. I recognize that. I've been in that situation when a guy's coming full speed.
"I made the move and got the puck back in the corner. I found DK and he did the rest. It was a beautiful shot."
Pavel Datsyuk and Gustav Nyquist scored in the third as the Red Wings rallied from a 2-0 deficit. Petr Mrazek stopped 27 shots.
DeKeyser's wrist shot over Louis Domingue's shoulder allowed Detroit to finish 5-1 on its longest trip of the season.
And it gave Larkin the upper hand over Domi, who was coming off his first career hat trick. Domi couldn't add to his 13 goals and 18 assists.
"Larks is such a strong skater. He split in between those two guys and created a little bit of chaos," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "One thing about Larks, he's a transporter, he's a shooter, but he can make a play."
Ekman-Larsson and Shane Doan scored second-period goals and Domingue made 22 saves, but Arizona's four-game winning streak was snapped.
The Coyotes weren't happy with the tying goal with 5:40 left.
As Anthony Duclair served a hooking penalty, Domingue made an impressive stick save on Nyquist. With Domingue sprawled out and bodies in the crease, Nyquist poked the puck over Domingue for his 13th goal.
The Coyotes challenged, saying Justin Abdelkader interfered with Domingue. But the goal was upheld after a video review.
"Abdelkader's leg is stuck in Domingue's pad so he can't get across," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "To me, it is inhibiting the goaltender's ability to make a save. I'd call it ten out of ten times you look at it and I can't believe it's not."
Added Domingue: "There's a guy in the crease, tangled between my pads."
The Coyotes dominated early, but Domingue's bid for a third shutout this month ended midway through the final period.
Datsyuk beat Domingue with a wrist shot at 11:50 while Antoine Vermette was out for hooking.
"It was a real soft call when you watch it," Tippett said of the penalty. "It was too good a hockey game and you just hate to see calls like that get made."
Ekman-Larsson put Arizona ahead when he collected Jordan Martinook's bouncing rebound in the slot and beat Mrazek low at 4:51 of the second period for his 13th goal.
Arizona went up 2-0 with Datsyuk serving a hooking penalty. Tobias Rieder's shot deflected off Doan's skate deep in the crease with 1:16 left in the second. It was the 39-year-old Doan's team-leading 16th goal.
Detroit gave up two power-play goals in a loss Monday night to Los Angeles that snapped a four-game winning streak and entered ranked 25th on the penalty kill.
But the Red Wings came alive with the help of costly penalties by the Coyotes.
"We need to go home," Datsyuk said. "It was a long trip and we needed to finish strong and we did today. I think we played well out there."
NOTES: In Kyle Quincey's second game back from ankle surgery, the Red Wings went back to dressing six defensemen. That left Alexy Marchenko a healthy scratch, one game after he scored against Los Angeles. ... The Coyotes placed D Stefan Elliott on waivers, a move that could lead to W John Scott's return from the minors in time to be eligible for the All-Star Game. Scott was voted the Pacific Division captain by fans and has one assist in 11 games. ... Arizona D Kevin Connauton, acquired Wednesday off waivers from Columbus, was a healthy scratch.
