Batavia's Coffey earns Daily Herald MVP honor
Batavia senior guard Canaan Coffey has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for his recent high school basketball performances.
Canaan Coffey, Batavia: This 6-foot-3 guard led the Bulldogs to a pair of weekend wins by scoring 47 points, 33 via 3-point shots. The senior kept Batavia unbeaten atop the Upstate Eight River by scoring 11 of his game-high 21 points in a fourth-quarter span of 2:43 to fuel a 55-48 comeback win over visiting Larkin. The next night at Marmion, Coffey sank 7 of 10 3-pointers and finished with 26 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in a 67-59 victory for the Bulldogs (9-6).
Tai Bibbs, West Chicago: The 6-foot-1 junior guard totaled 51 points in a pair of Wildcats wins. Bibbs scored 21 points in a 70-42 nonconference win over Sycamore and followed with a personal-high 30 points in a 72-66 overtime win at West Aurora. Bibbs added 4 steals and 4 assists to pace West Chicago's first win over West Aurora since 2005.
Aidan Einloth, Grayslake North: Like his ACT score (34), the Knights (12-1) have been nearly perfect. The MIT-bound senior forward poured in a career-high 28 points in a win over Hampshire. He then put up strong numbers again in a loss to Prairie Ridge, scoring 19 points (two 3-pointers), grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking 3 shots.
Danny Walsh, St. Viator: The senior forward did a little bit of everything as the Lions put together a strong start-to-finish effort to pick up a home victory against Hinsdale Central. Walsh led the Lions with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals and had a pair of 3s as St. Viator prevailed 48-45.
