Time to strengthen federal government

I agree with the writer of the letter to the editor (Jan. 1 "States need to restrain the feds") in calling for a U.S. Constitutional convention for the purpose of amending it. Here are a few of my suggestions:

1. All citizens have the right to medical care with financial assistance.

2. States are administrative units and cannot sue the federal government.

3. Repeal the 2nd Amendment to end gun violence.

4. Without exception workers can associate and negotiate wages and working conditions with their employers.

5. Corporations have no free speech rights and cannot participate in elections or promote candidates.

6. Military spending is limited to 1 percent of GDP, unless Congress declares war.

7. No state can interfere with women's reproductive choices.

8. The U.S. Congress can pass any law which promotes and provides for the general welfare.

The founders of the U.S. Constitution sought and achieved the formation of a strong, energetic central government. It removed power from the states and ended the chaos which was present in a society governed by the Articles of Confederation. You should not want America to return again to the pre-Constitution chaos. It is time to strengthen the federal government, not weaken it. George Washington, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton would agree with me.
