Train display returns to Morton Arboretumm

Keeping with tradition, the Morton Arboretum's Enchanted Railroad is back again with new additions.

Up close and personal at two feet high, the bustle of toy trains fills the hearts of young children.

The Morton Arboretum's Enchanted Railroad display is in its 14th year, a beloved showcase of model trains spanning two levels that sit at just the right height for tiny tots to experience.

This year's display, featuring a four seasons theme, includes interactive buttons to bring to life autumn haunted houses and spring water fountains. Not only does the theme reflect the nature found in the area, but also includes many small details of the arboretum's grounds, including trucks full of greenery and even tiny dogs resembling those involved each year in the Husky Heroes event.

Diane Fischer-Woods, special events coordinator for the arboretum, is in her 13th year witnessing the charm of the Enchanted Railroad display. Changes have come about over time, she says, such as the migration away from a Polar Express and holiday theme to a more inclusive seasonal theme.

However, that's not the only thing that's changed over the years. Fischer-Woods remarked that, over time, the number of visitors has increased, from about 5,000 in the first year to 14,000 last year.

With the help of the LGB Railroad Club of Chicago, the layout of the tracks was designed to accommodate up to 12 trains at once, including a replica Amtrak train this year.

Another special element is the Lego engine on display. Designed by artist Sean Kenney, who created the Nature Connects exhibit displayed at the arboretum last year, the engine was featured on an episode of “30 Rock” and includes 2,500 Lego pieces.

“The highlight is just the fact that kids so enjoy spending time with it. There are children that spend more than an hour watching the trains,” Fischer-Woods said.

The Enchanted Railroad exhibit opens Friday, Jan. 15, and continues through Feb. 21 at the Morton Arboretum, 4100 Route 53, Lisle. The display is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.

Tickets specifying railroad viewing times are free with arboretum admission and available at the information desk in the Visitor Center. For information, call (630) 968-0074 or visit mortonarb.org.
