Wheaton council approves city manager agreement

The Wheaton City Council has approved an employment agreement with Michael Dzugan to become city manager effective May 1.

Dzugan, who has served as assistant city manager since 1991, will be paid $165,000 a year. He is replacing longtime City Manager Don Rose, who announced his retirement last month.

"I just feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Don over the last 24 years," Dzugan said. "He has really served as a great mentor to me, particularly in providing a great example of how to manage and how to successfully serve a community like the city of Wheaton ... I'll use his wisdom wisely as I go forward."

Councilman John Prendiville said he was happy to approve Dzugan's agreement because he is well qualified and brings continuity of leadership.

"I think that continuity is a hallmark of city government," Prendiville said. "It's a good place to work, we've got great people, our department heads are excellent workers and a lot of that has to do with the leadership of our city manager and our assistant city manager. Mike has played a huge role in that."

Other members of the council also congratulated Dzugan and said they look forward to working with him when he is put into the new role.

"He's a man of integrity and competence and will be a good steward of the city," Councilman Todd Scalzo said.

Dzugan worked as assistant city manager in Crystal Lake before joining the Wheaton staff.
