Schaumburg Police Department Introduces Video Sharing Partnership Program

The Schaumburg Police Department is introducing a new video sharing partnership program that will allow property owners the ability to share video with the police with the intent to reduce crime and aid in the apprehension of criminals.

The program is available to any property owner within the village's municipal boundaries that has private video surveillance that can record public areas such as streets, sidewalks, parking lots, etc. The program is voluntary and requires no cost from property owners.

"This video sharing program is just another example in which we as a police department would like to work with the community to help solve crimes that occur in our neighborhoods," said Schaumburg Police Chief Jim Lamkin. "With many private surveillance systems already in place in our community, we hope to tap into another resource that could potentially be used to aid in our investigation process."

To register for the program, users must submit a registration form to the police department that is available on the village's website at www.ci.schaumburg.il.us/PSAFETY/PSafety/Pages/VideoSharingPartnershipProgram.aspx.

Once the form is submitted, the police department will follow up to confirm enrollment in the program and users will receive a small, reflective decal if they wish to display it on their property to help deter crime. There is no fee to register and information will be kept confidential. Participants can opt-out of the program at any time.

Property owners who register a security camera would only be contacted by the Schaumburg Police Department if a criminal incident takes place in the vicinity of that camera. Police personnel will ask camera owners to review or provide a copy of recorded footage related to a specific incident, and they will work with the property owner to review, download and/or copy any recorded incident.

Police personnel will only ask to view footage related to a specific criminal act for use as evidence to aid ongoing investigations. Any video data information shared with police will be housed in a secure database. The police department will not have remote or direct access to any private video systems nor will the program be used for active or live feed surveillance.

For questions regarding the program, contact Schaumburg Police Investigations Division Commander Kurt Metzger at kmetzger@villageofschaumburg.com or (847) 348-7339.
