Larkin's Hunter wins Week 2 MVP honor
Larkin senior guard AJ Hunter has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for his recent high school boys basketball performances.
AJ Hunter, Larkin: This senior was instrumental in a pair of impressive victories over an 18-hour span. In an 84-80 win at rival Elgin, the 6-foot guard shot 7 of 10 from the field, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range, to finish with 17 points. In a matinee against East St. Louis the following day at the UIC Pavilion, Hunter sank all 3 of his second-half 3-point attempts to help Larkin pull away for a 60-54 win.
Brian Dompke, Fremd: The 6-foot-5 junior forward had a lot to do with the Vikings' perfect start against Mid-Suburban League competition last weekend. He scored in double figures against both foes, getting 11 in a 53-27 win against visiting Palatine, followed by a game-high 17 against host Elk Grove on Saturday as the Vikes improved to 6-1.
Alex Passi, Glenbard West: The Hilltoppers added to their unbeaten start thanks in much part to their 6-foot-2 senior guard. Passi scored 16 points in a 64-51 win over South Elgin, then had 13 in a 46-43 victory over Naperville Central. Passi won that one with a half-court shot at the buzzer.
Nick Penny, Lake Zurich: Some masked men are good guys. Take the senior guard. Wearing a protective mask after breaking his nose in practice, Penny helped the Bears snatch a pair of wins. He had 14 points in a victory over Lake Forest, then scored points in a triumph over Vernon Hills.
