Katis connects for Barrington against Hoffman Estates
Enjoying her finest game of the season, Barrington senior guard Kelly Katis scored a game-high 15 points with 5 rebounds and 5 assists as the Fillies posted a 48-38 victory over visiting Hoffman Estates on Friday night in girls basketball.
"I thought Kelly had a really nice game on both ends of the floor," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "She made some nice passes and was a major contributor offensively."
Senior Megan Talbot added 13 points for the Fillies while classmate Abigail Elo had 7.
"Megan did a did nice job getting rebounds," Barreiro said of her Illinois State recruit who grabbed 12 boards.
Alex Van Ryne had 6 points and Auri Grayson 5.
Grayson also had 6 rebounds.
"Auri had two really big offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter," Barreiro said. "They were great hustle plays and that one of the things she does best.
"As a team, we had great energy start to finish. But we didn't shoot to well at the free throw line (8-of-18). That's got to improve.
"I thought we forced some shots in the fourth quarter but as a team we looked good. I like our balanced scoring too with a lot of kids contributing offensively."
Monraia Wilson led the Hawks (3-4, 0-1) with 12 points and a pair of 3-pointers while senior Jenny Nailor added 7. Teammates Erin Hanson and Tayler Williams each chipped in 6.
Fremd 75, Palatine 37: Senior Bryana Hopkins scored a game-high 21 points and had 3 steals as host Fremd improved to 8-0 with the victory in its Mid-Suburban West opener.
"I thought our kids did a nice job attacking their zone," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "We couldn't get any 3-pointers to fall in the first half but still scored 34 points."
Fremd had six 3-pointers in the second half and seven for the game. Hopkins, Brianna Lewis (15 points. 3 assists), Erin Lenahan (6 points, 5 rebounds), Haley Williams (3 assists), Amanda McCartney, Grace Tworek (7 points) and Lauren Glaser each had one 3-pointer.
"We shot the ball much better in second half," Yates added. "We had seven different kids hit threes with was nice to see. Mark's (Palatine coach Mark Jonson) kids played extremely hard and battled us the entire game. I think our size just got to them eventually."
Geena Eliades (11 points) and Ashley Shapiro (6) led the Pirates (3-4, 0-1).
Rolling Meadows 65, Elk Grove 27: Host Rolling Meadows (6-2, 1-0) won its MSL East opener with eight 3-pointers, including two from Kyra Spiwak (18 points).
Megan King (9 points) had three 3-pointers while Meghan Slowik (6 points), Kelsey Nallon (7 points) and Morgan Campagna (7 points) each had one. Katherine Nolan also had 7 points for Meadows, which faces off against Batavia today at 10 a.m. in the Chicagoland Invitational Showcase at Fremd High School.
"Our girls came out ready to play," said Meadow coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "I thought Kyra Spiwak had one of her better games in terms of balancing being a scorer and making her teammates better. Meghan Slowik gave us solid minutes off the bench."
Sarah Pauscher (8 points) and Abbey Sloan (6) led Elk Grove (1-6, 0-1).
Buffalo Grove 54, Wheeling 29: Sammy Stejskal (16 points) and Maddie Welter (14 points, two 3-pointers) led visiting BG (5-2, 1-0) in its Mid-Suburban League opener.
Melissa Claver scored all of her team-high 11 points in the second half for Wheeling (3-5, 0-1) which also received 7 points from Nansy Velev and 6 from Shannon Kennedy.
Maine West 50, Deerfield 49: Senior Jordan Hart was right at the heart of this win for the Warriors (5-3) in their Central Suburban North season opener in Deerfield.
Hart's putback at the final buzzer gave West the 1-point victory and she finished with a team-high 15 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists.
Senior Eliza Palarz contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite picking up four fouls in the first half, freshman Rachel Kent had 8 points for West while senior Monica Liwag added 5 with a 3-pointer in the third quarter.
Leyden 67, Taft 56: Gianna Grande led the host Eagles with 26 points and Cherish Sepulveda added 17 points in the nonconference win.
Next in the Leyden scoring line came Annissa Lemon (10), Artasia Gusman (8) and Amalia Figueroa (6).
