Oakbrook School Students Shop for the Holidays
Oakbrook School students in Wood Dale were offered an opportunity to shop for gifts today with "money" provided by the PTO. Students were each given a $1 coupon from the PTO and about 5 minutes to choose from a variety of small items ranging from 25 cents to $7. Students could also bring money from home to add to their PTO coupon. Each gift purchased came with a shiny gift bag for easy wrapping. "Students have to determine what each item costs and how many items they can afford to buy within their own budget, so this is a great real-world math lesson," said first grade teacher Shannon Dalton. There were plenty of PTO volunteers on hand to assist students with their shopping. "The kids love to shop, and they get so excited to get a receipt after using their 'money'. We like that all students have a chance to give their families a little gift for the holidays, too," said PTO President Mrs. Hernandez. The Oakbrook PTO has been providing this non-profit activity to students for several years. First grader Donavan summed up his experience: "I really liked being able to buy gifts for my family!"
