Valencia says coach Nuno is leaving by mutual agreement
MADRID (AP) - Valencia says coach Nuno Espirito Santo is leaving the club by mutual agreement.
The club said in a statement late Monday that it is grateful to the coach and his staff for "their work over the last 18 months."
The statement says former defender Salvador "Voro" Gonzalez has been appointed as interim coach, "with the support of Phil Neville."
Valencia lost 1-0 at Sevilla on Sunday and is ninth in the Spanish league.
Former Manchester United and England defender Neville joined Valencia as assistant coach in July. Voro coached Valencia in 2008, helping it win the Copa del Rey, but was replaced by Unai Emery.
Valencia hosts Barcelona in La Liga on Saturday and is third in Group H of the Champions League, retaining a chance of advancing to the knockout stage.
