An Easy Way to Do Some Good This Holiday Season Starting 12/1

Chicago, IL - Janice Nason's interest in volunteering with the 501(c)3 non-profit Girl Up Initiative Uganda stems from her experience in middle school. "Ages 10-13 - you are in such formative years that have a lasting impact on the rest of your life. During that time I was bullied at school which was damaging because you spend so much time there. The teachers, counselors, students - no one supported me, taught me I was valued as a human being. That has stayed with me all these years even though I'm blessed with an amazing family".

Working with Girl Up Uganda is an opportunity for Nason to support adolescent girls in understanding their own value and worth at a time that's crucial to their development, in ways their environment may not currently be doing.

Girl Up Uganda's programs supplement regular school curriculums by teaching subjects such as sexual & reproductive health & rights, confidence, and leadership. It educates and empowers adolescent girls and young women with the goal of reducing teenage pregnancy and child marriage among participants while increasing graduation rates from secondary schools. Girl Up also teaches the income generating skill of tailoring so that the women can support themselves and their families and become financially independent through its social enterprise Mazuri Designs.

December 1st is the fourth annual Giving Tuesday, a global campaign that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday with the intention celebrating generosity, philanthropy and giving.

Girl Up Initiative Uganda is launching a giving campaign on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 on IndieGoGo's new crowdfunding platform for socially minded organizations, Generosity. Nason encourages you to participate in the movement by finding an organization to contribute to. You could even involve the whole family, using Giving Tuesday as an opportunity to talk with your children about the importance of generosity and brainstorm together how they can contribute to making the world better.

If you feel connected to the work Girl Up is doing and want to be part of its story, she asks that you visit Girl Up's campaign page. Learn more about the non-profit and support the work they are doing in Kampala by helping fund their 2016 work.
