U-46 schools to honor veterans, active members of the armed forces

Many Elgin Area School District U-46 schools are preparing to honor and support local veterans and troops Nov. 9-11. Schools will host classroom visits, assembly meetings, and concerts for members who have served our country throughout the week in honor of Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

• Horizon Elementary School has invited all area retired and active duty military personnel to their fifth annual Day of Honor at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9. Students will perform a special selection of songs at the assembly and honored guests will visit classrooms to share their stories.

• Members of different branches of the military will be visiting classes through the day on Monday, Nov. 9, at Streamwood High School.

• At noon Tuesday, Nov. 10, students will present poems and readings to veterans, followed by a question-and-answer period, at Ontarioville Elementary School in Hanover Park.

• At 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, sixth-graders will conduct a ceremony to honor veterans at Hanover Countryside Elementary School in Streamwood.

• A veteran will speak to kindergartners at Fox Meadow Elementary School in South Elgin at 8:45 a.m. and noon Wednesday, Nov. 11.

• Three guests will speak on behalf of the Patriot Guard organization, which honors the fallen heroes who are being laid to rest, at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Ellis Middle School in Elgin.

• Kenyon Woods Middle School will hold a Veterans Day assembly at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, with a keynote speaker who is a Navy nuclear technician.

• Kimball Middle School will hold a schoolwide assembly at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, to commemorate Veterans Day. Elgin AMVETS Post 202 will talk about the history of service personnel.

• Prairieview Elementary School will host a Veterans Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11.

• Spring Trail Elementary School will hold a Veterans Day Assembly at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11. The band and orchestra students will perform for veterans and there will be a presentation of colors and guest speakers.

• On Veterans Day, students will be setting the white table in honor of those who have fallen through the day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Century Oaks Elementary School in Elgin.

• South Elgin High School will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at the flagpole at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11.

• On Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, morning and afternoon assemblies will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at Nature Ridge Elementary School in Bartlett.

• On Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, morning and afternoon assemblies will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at Ronald O'Neal Elementary School in Elgin.

• Elgin High School will commemorate Veterans Day at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, with a reading, recognizing veterans who are staff members and those students who have committed to the military.

• At 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, students Heritage Elementary School in Streamwood will gather around the flagpole for readings.

• Lincoln Elementary School in Hoffman Estates will hold an assembly highlighting parents who are veterans at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11.
