Reports: Gliniewicz's wife, son under investigation over Explorer funds

Reports late Wednesday said Lt. Joe Gliniewicz's wife, Melodie, and son D.J. are under investigation in connection with the embezzlement of funds from the Fox Lake Police Explorer Program.

ABC 7 Chicago and Fox 32 cited anonymous sources. Lake County investigators did not confirmed the information.

Lake County Major Crimes Task Force leader George Filenko said earlier Wednesday that Gliniewicz shot himself in the chest Sept. 1 because he feared his theft of money from the Fox Lake Law Enforcement Explorer youth program, which he ran, was going to be uncovered by a village audit. Melodie Gliniewicz also has been involved with the Explorers program.

In September, D.J. Gliniewicz told the Daily Herald there was no way his father killed himself.

"The people who are starting these rumors ... it was after (Lake County Coroner Dr. Thomas) Rudd released some information that shouldn't have been released, and a lot of the media and a lot of the people have taken that and construed it into their own story to fill in holes. ... They are attacking our family and our name. Let us have our time to remember my father. My father has never once had a suicidal thought in his life."

Through an attorney on Wednesday, the Gliniewicz family released a statement saying: "Today has been another day of deep sorrow for the Gliniewicz Family. The family has cooperated with the Task Force's investigation and will not comment at this time. The Gliniewicz family requests that their privacy be respected as they continue to cope with the loss of the beloved husband and Father."
