Mayor Pulice and Officer Murray visit second grade students at Oakbrook School
Wood Dale second graders had plenty of tough questions for Mayor Pulice and Officer Murray, but the two guest speakers were more than happy to answer them all. On Tuesday, October 27th, Mayor Pulice and Deputy Police Chief Murray visited with over 100 second grade students to field questions that the students created in class to prepare for the visit. Second grade students are studying communities and government in social studies, and the visit added some real-life experience to the curriculum. "Meeting them in person helped the students realize that there are real-life people serving our community on a daily basis," said second grade teacher Melissa Davis. Second grader Lisette added some of what she learned. "The policeman captures bad guys and the mayor runs the city. They keep us safe." Some of the questions asked of the mayor were, how did you get this job, and what is a typical day like for a mayor. Deputy Police Chief Murray was asked if he caught anyone speeding, how someone can become a police chief and what kinds of vehicles the police have. "We are grateful to Mayor Pulice and Officer Murray for spending the time with our students. The kids were so excited to meet them both, and it really helped students to connect what they are learning to the real world," said enrichment consultant and LMC coordinator Sandy Smolenski. Oakbrook Elementary School serves over 300 students in kindergarten through second grades in Wood Dale district 7.
